NAHREP Statement on the Events of the Past Week

Our heartfelt condolences go out to George Floyd’s family and his loved ones, and to the countless others whose lives have been taken through acts of racism and injustice.

The outrage we see on the streets today is a reflection of the centuries of pain and frustration caused by systemic racism and economic inequality. There are deep-rooted seeds of racism interspersed in our society that have been left unaddressed for too long. It is clear that as a nation, we are nearing a breaking point.

We also stand with all of the small businesses suffering additional losses, not only from COVID-19, but also from the unfortunate vandalism and theft that has been brought on during this time of grief and anger. NAHREP condemns the actions of the few that don’t reflect the spirit of the powerful images we’ve seen of peaceful demonstrations around the country.

The Black and Latino communities are not mutually exclusive. Nearly three million Latinos identify as Afro-Latino. Black-Americans and Latinos have fought together for fair housing, economic equality, and reforming our broken immigration system. Today we stand together in the name of justice and in the effort to build a stronger and more equitable society for all. May God Bless America. #NAHREP #BlackLivesMatter #GeorgeFloyd
