NAHREP urges Congress to act on DACA, providing a path to citizenship for Dreamers
Celebrating NAHREP familia, cultura, politics, and grassroots action
October, 2022
This week, NAHREP issued a statement expressing our disappointment in the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that affirmed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program as unlawful. Last year, a Texas-based U.S. District Judge also ruled the program unlawful, in part because it did not follow typical administrative procedure – it had not been subjected to appropriate public notice and comment periods required under Federal law. Last week, the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the Texas court’s ruling, sending the case back to the lower court to review the newest version of the rule issued by the Biden Administration in late August. While the 600,000 DACA recipients currently enrolled have not lost their status, the program’s longevity and protections for Dreamers are at risk. Join NAHREP in urging your elected officials to provide a path to citizenship for DACA recipients here.
Immigration reform and support for DACA are at the core of NAHREP’s policy priorities. Not only because our members are passionate about this issue but because we believe immigration policy is rooted in economic policy. With an aging population, increasing labor shortage, and ongoing supply chain disruptions, immigration reform remains a key solution to strengthening our economy.
Think about it: DACA recipients are young, vibrant members of our workforce and have already contributed billions of dollars to our economy. Currently, 77% of DACA recipients are in the labor force and contribute an estimated $11.7 billion annually to the economy. Moreover, DACA recipient households have $25.5 million in spending power, own 68,000 homes, and contribute $760 million in mortgage payments. At NAHREP, we know that immigrants are critical to building a prosperous economy.
Notwithstanding the circuit court’s decision, DACA was never intended to be a permanent solution. That is why NAHREP is once again calling on Congress to end the uncertainty and act with urgency to provide a path to citizenship for these Dreamers, for the honor of our nation and the economic wellbeing of our communities.
