This June, Freddie Mac released a study analyzing the homeownership gap experienced by Latinos in the U.S. The report notes that despite Hispanic gains in homeownership, the White/Hispanic homeownership gap continues to be more than 20 percentage points. Through regression analysis of household level data from the 2015 American Community Survey (ACS), the report demonstrates that most of the homeownership gap experienced by Hispanic families in comparison to their White counterparts can be explained by demographic data such as age, English proficiency, income and education. While these may be contributing factors, Freddie Mac estimates that some of it may be due to wealth gaps and discrimination. NAHREP CEO, Gary Acosta believes the homeownership gap will also improve if the industry is successful in recruiting and training substantially more culturally competent real estate and loan professionals that can help Latino first time buyers navigate through the process.
