NAHREP Statement on Nomination of Isabel Guzman as Head of Small Business Administration

The National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals® (NAHREP®) congratulates President-elect Biden for his selection of Isabel Guzman as head of the Small Business Administration (SBA).

Ms. Guzman’s experience at the SBA during the Obama administration and her contributions as director of California’s Office of the Small Business Advocate place her in an ideal position to contribute to an agency that intimately impacts Latinos.

NAHREP’s 2020 State of Hispanic Wealth Report demonstrates the importance Latinos play in small business.

  • Latino employer businesses grew twice as fast as those of the general population. As of 2018, 1 in 4 new entrepreneurs was Latino.
  • Latinos were more than twice as likely as their non-Hispanic White counterparts to invest in a business when they have extra cash.
  • 13 percent of households who do not already own a business have plans to start one in the next 5 years.
  • Latina-owned businesses are growing faster than those of any other demographic.

Ms. Guzman will lead the agency which administers the Paycheck Protection Program, which is set to continue to provide coronavirus reliefin the form of forgivable loans to small businesses, nonprofits and self-employed entrepreneurs. As the largest Latino business member organization, NAHREP looks forward to working alongside her team to advance the mission of the agency.

NAHREP has joined Latino organizations from across the country to urge the Biden-Harris administration to make history by appointing at least 5 Latino/as to his cabinet. This is the fourth Latino appointed to the cabinet, and the first Latina woman.

“As a Latina small business owner, I am proud that a fellow Latina will represent the Small Business Administration during a time when we need someone who understands the critical nuances of the fastest growing population of entrepreneurs in the U.S.,” said 2021 NAHREP President Sara Rodriguez.
