National Hispanic Construction Alliance (NHCA) Launches Inaugural Los Angeles Chapter

Keynote by Mark Madrid, Associate Administrator for the Office of Entrepreneurial Development at the U.S. Small Business Administration, as Adrian C. Avila named President, New Board Installed

SAN DIEGO—May 10, 2024— The National Hispanic Construction Alliance (NHCA) launched its inaugural chapter in Los Angeles last night at an event attended by NAHREP Co-founder and CEO, Gary Acosta, NHCA Interim Executive Director, Sergio Barajas, and former NAHREP National President, Jerry Ascencio. The event was keynoted by Mark Madrid, the Associate Administrator for the Office of Entrepreneurial Development at the U.S. Small Business Administration.

NHCA is a trade association powered by the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP®), the nation’s largest Latino business association. It was created to support Latino-owned construction businesses, workers, and tradesmen in building capacity and creating business opportunities for its members.

The newly installed NHCA Los Angeles Chapter Board includes leaders in the construction and finance sectors who will help guide the mission to provide members with access to educational resources, financial programs, and career elevation.

Supporting Latinos in construction and boosting Latino participation in contracting is crucial to tackling labor shortages in the homebuilder and housing industries. According to a Construction Employers Alliance (CEA) research summary, Hispanics comprise 27.7% of construction workers compared to 18.5% of the overall workforce. Yet, according to the National Association of Home Builders, Latinos represent 55% of the construction workforce in California. NHCA is dedicated to addressing these challenges and advocating for support and increased business opportunities for its members.

The NHCA Los Angeles Board members are:

Adrian C. Avila, President
Alberto Penaranda, Vice President
Richard (Rich) Hernandez, Treasurer
Ricky Castro, Secretary
Fabian Casarez, Education Director
Renee Y. Cardona, Events Director
Janet Paredes, Events Director
Darlene Crystal Martinez, Membership Director
David Carino, Director
Zacarias Cervantes, Director

“I am honored to be part of the very first NHCA chapter launch and proud to be part of an organization dedicated to driving professional growth for Latinos in construction,” said NHCA Los Angeles Chapter President Adrian C. Avila.

“Los Angeles is ground zero for Latino entrepreneurship,” said Gary Acosta, Co-Founder and CEO of NAHREP. “With the launch of the first NHCA chapter in Los Angeles, I am looking forward to seeing the impact they will make in the construction industry and the local community.”

NHCA will be launching its next chapter in Phoenix in June.
